GET TO KNOW ME Hi, I’m Linda. I am a Photographer based on the beautiful South Shore of Nova Scotia. |
Photography has been a passion for many years. Recently I have had more time to devote to my art and have started an online presence. I have also begun to exhibit my photography. My first exhibit focuses on a recent visit to a very special part of Nova Scotia, where very few people get the opportunity to visit - Sable Island. Sable Island is a National Park and is known for it's population of wild horses. Through my photography you have an opportunity to "visit" the truly beautiful and magnificent wild horses.

Sable Island's Landscape
The environment is harsh, but the horses have lived and thrived on the island for hundreds of years. They have adapted to the food sources available. There are fresh water ponds, but they also know how to dig in the sand to reach the fresh water table. Each horse takes it's turn in the hierarchy.
|
The lifespan of the horses is shortened, but the horses appear to enjoy life and the comfort of living in the small bands they join. You can see evidence of the harsh landscape appearing in the aging horses, but the foals are a fresh start to carrying on the thriving bands, or small herds .

The Orphan
I would be remiss if I didn't show one of my favorite images, but also one of my heartbreaking images. This is the orphan. He was a sweet little foal I saw standing off on his own. I thought it was strange that I didn't see other horses around so I went to explore. The mare, his mother, was lying dead in the dunes. The orphan was staying with the mare, but I also saw that he was grazing. The band had moved on. I spoke with the park staff and they believed he would likely join up with another small band of horses in time. Park staff cannot intervene and must let nature take it's course. I hope to get back to Sable Island at some point. I am not sure if I would be able to spot or recognize this little fellow again, but it sure would be wonderful to see him alive and thriving.
